Mackinac State Historic Parks has an historic object and archives collection of several thousand items. Fort Mackinac (1781-1895) on Mackinac Island features a fisheries history exhibit related to the fishing and the fishing industry of the Straits area, many of these items excavated from Colonial Michilimackinac (1715-1781) in Mackinaw City. The Fort Mackinac exhibit explores the transitional time period from fur trade to an emerging fishing industry, and the important role Mackinac Island played within the Great Lakes fishing industry. Of particular note is an interactive replica fishing dock scene. On display is an 1850’s Fishing Receipt Book and a metal fish inspector stamp both of which are on display at Fort Mackinac (1781-1895) on Mackinac Island. Also interpreted is a model of the famed Mackinaw Boat, describing its important role relating to fur and fish industry during this time period.
Along with historic sites, Mackinac State Historic Parks also maintains the Petersen Center Library and Research Center here in Mackinaw City where the public can come and research topics related to the region.
