Mackinac State Historic Parks has an historic object and archives collection of several thousand items. We also have over 1 million items excavated from Fort Michilimackinac (1715-1781) in Mackinaw City. Many of the objects relate to fishing and the fishing industry here at the straits. In Mackinaw City, exhibits include fish hooks, lead weights and other related items excavated and on display at Colonial Michilimackinac. Also on display is a complete and finely preserved fossilized Lake Whitefish skeleton.

Along with historic sites, Mackinac State Historic Parks also maintains the Petersen Center Library and Research Center here in Mackinaw City where the public can come and research topics related to the region.
